This past season Water for Life International drilled eight water wells in NE Guatemala. We also refurbished several pumps that have been in service for some time. We now are providing safe water for over 30 villages in all and are providing water for about 12,000 to 15,000 people.
We have made good contacts with the municipal authorities in Poptun and San Luis and have had many requests for wells that we cannot fill. The mayor of San Luis is particularly interested in having wells drilled throughout his district and is willing to subsidize their installation. The mayor of Poptun is likewise interested, but the financial situation in Poptun is precarious. They would like to help pay, but at present have no money.
We have good relationships with the Ministry of Health in the districts. Our provision of hospital equipment and linens was particularly well received. They also are interested in having us drill wells to serve hospitals and clinics. In all areas where we have been working the requests have been increasing. The demand is more than we can supply with our present equipment. Our drills are in good shape and our service truck works very well and we are constantly adding to our shop. We also have an increasing number of folks who are willing to come and volunteer. It is good, but we want to do more.
We believe the time has come to move beyond the capability of our cable drills. We are looking for a good used rotary drill. It needn’t be large because most of our wells are about 250 to 400 feet deep, but we need to find a drill that still has good service life left in it. We are not looking for something that will break immediately or need lots of work to put it in serviceable condition. We have learned there is no point in shipping junk to Guatemala.
If you have a drill that you would like to donate, or if you have one that you would be willing to sell at less than market price, please contact us. We are a 501(c) (3) corporation. We need your help. The people of Guatemala need your generosity. Why not donate and let us ship the rig to Guatemala and then this winter come down and put your rig and your skills to work. We can give you a tax deduction and an adventure. We can also give you something priceless; the joy and satisfaction of doing something for others that will come from your involvement. Thank you.
